WWE superstar Darren Young comes out publicly: “I’m gay. And I’m happy. I’m very happy.”

Let’s be honest here.

I’ve watched WWE Wrestling maybe three times and each of those times was when my oldest nephew was visiting and insisted I watch with him.

But I’m thrilled that one of WWE’s superstars, Darren Young, has come out publicly as a gay man – the first ever in the league to do so.

He did it beautifully.

Asked in an interview if a gay wrestler could succeed in WWE, Young casually revealed to the interviewer that he is, in fact, gay.

“Absolutely,” he said. “Look at me. I’m a WWE superstar, and to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now—I’m gay. And I’m happy. I’m very happy.”

Asked if his going public might make a difference, Young said: “I hope so. I’m hoping to be able to make a difference. It’s very important to me that people understand that somebody’s sexual preference shouldn’t really matter. It should be about the person.”

So far, he has received very public support from the WWE community including fellow wrestler John Cena (see second video).
