WTF? Serena loses opening match in Paris!
If ever there was going to be a year that Serena Williams was going to win the French Open for the second time, this was it.
She was having her best clay court season in ages winning 15 consecutive matches on the surface.
Those wins included convincing victories over Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova – the other dominant players this year.
But somehow, Serena’s 2012 French Open is over.
She was two points from victory NINE times against Virginie Razzano yet still managed to lose 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 – the first time in her entire career that she lost in the opening round of a grand slam tournament.
I’d rank it as one of the biggest upsets on the women’s side in French Open history given Serena’s form coming into the tournament, the fact that she is a 13-times grand slam singles champion and the best player of her generation and that Razzano was ranked No. 111 entering the tournament.
Williams was in tears after losing the second set tie-breaker then went down 0-5 in the third set. She fought back and saved seven match points before losing.
Better luck at Wimbledon Serena!
