Wimbledon 2009: Roger Federer and Venus Williams each look to win a sixth singles title and I’m rooting for them!

The regal Roger Federer and Venus Williams are the two most successful grasscourt players of the decade and two of the classiest champions Wimbledon has ever had.

They are also both fashion plates with a great sense of style who I think, and hope, are going to win again this year.

Federer, the champion in 2003, 2004,2005,2006,2007 and runner-up in 2008, will be looking to reclaim the title and win his 15th grand slam singles tournament – the most in history. Roger won his first French Open just two weeks ago (it is insane how close the French and Wimbkedon are on the tennis calendar) and with the withdrawal of top-ranked Rafael Nadal, he looks to be the overwhelming favorite.

Federer (pictured wearing the jacket he will wear on Centre Court this year) is at his absolute best on grass but I do wonder how eager he will be after his recent historic win in Paris. If he’s less than 100 percent keen, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic or Andy Roddick will be looking to grab the title. Germany’s Tommy Haas has also been in fine form.

Still, it will be a tall order for them or anyone else to beat Roger at the All England Club. Nadal was finally able to do it last year but not until Federer extended him to 9-7 in the fifth!

Everyone expects the Williams sisters to meet in the finals for the fourth time. If they do, I give the edge to Venus, the champion in 2000, 2001, 2005, 2007 and 2008. Serena Williams, the 2002 and 2003 Wimbledon winner who was also runner-up in 2004 and last year, is the reigning US Open and Australian Open champion. But her big sister is the better grasscourt player so if they both make it to the final, look for Venus to hoist the winner’s plate once more.

After she lost two finals to Serena, I did not expect Venus to become a dominant queen of Wimbledon in the tradition of Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King. But she’s won three of the last four years and can tie King’s six singles titles this year. (Graf owns seven while Navratilova won nine.)

Federer (pictured below checking out Centre Court this weekend) would break the tie he is in with five-time champ Bjorn Borg with a victory but would still be one shy of the record seven won by Pete Sampras.
