Wilson Cruz gets real in post-election FB post: “We can’t fool ourselves anymore, thinking 2016 wasn’t the truth”
Actor Wilson Cruz of Star Trek: Discovery and My So-Called Life fame posted this ob Facebook this morning about the still incomplete results of the Presidential Election:
Deeply diseased. That seems to be, for me, the most succinct and accurate description of this country… and it’s just heart breaking, given the potential, here. Honestly, and I mean this, regardless of the final outcome, this election has irreversibly redefined this country, for me. This turn towards authoritarianism is a choice, it turns out, not a fluke, as I’ve wanted to believe… and that is unacceptable.
In the face of a disastrous response to an uncontrollable pandemic, an economy suffering because of it, a stolen Supreme Court seat and a national and international reckoning on race in which he provided comfort to White nationalists, the United States has declared its consent and is doubling down on the White Supremacy that is, indeed, a feature of the racist caste system we have endured and continue to endure. I count my fair skinned Latino brethren in this number. Too many have deluded themselves into believing in their own Whiteness. But know this, the fact is that there still aren’t enough of us to blame for this outcome. We are as much a part of this caste system and suffer the consequences economically, socially and psychologically, just like everyone else.
In the end, this is a White people problem and only White people can solve it by healing themselves from the cancer of racism. Clearly, not enough of them have and we all pay the price.
I wanted so badly to believe that 2016 was a statistical aberration because our side got lazy and didn’t show up because of a terrible candidate… It wasn’t the candidate. It wasn’t because she was a woman. It wasn’t because she was polarizing. No. WE are the problem.
This system is the problem. Our educational system, which keeps the electorate dumb, is the problem. This sad excuse for a “democracy”, built upon a racist caste system, in which “one man, one vote” is a joke, is the problem. And the worst part of it is that, for the people for whom this benefits, this is all working fine – as it should be, actually, so what incentive is there to change anything?
Understand that I know that Joe Biden may still win. It’ll be lovely if he does. It won’t change the fact that this disease has taken hold and it’s clear that this authoritarian cancer has spread to the root. The root, in fact, may be the source. I’ve lost what little respect for our system I’d held onto for the last 4 years. We can’t fool ourselves anymore, thinking 2016 wasn’t the truth. It was. The actual veil has been lifted. I was blind. Either way, now, I see. Got it.

FAEN says:
Half of the country believes in dragging us back to a tune when gay men and women lived in the closet, African Americans had Jim Crow to deal with and women were considered nothing more than vessels.
Trump didn’t create these people but he gave them permission to be who they are.
I am disgusted with half of my country. I will also never live in a red state. Never.
