Why Laverne Cox’s casting in ‘Doubt’ is historic
Laverne Cox is about to make show business history – again.
The Orange is the New Black (OITNB) star will become the first transgender person to play a transgender series regular role on a broadcast television series.
She has been cast opposite Katherine Heigl in the CBS legal drama Doubt which will premiere this fall.
‘We are picked up for series. So grateful and so happy,’ Cox
posted on Instagram when the pick-up was announced recently.
Her other historic firsts include:
– The first openly transgender person to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in the acting category for her performance in OITNB as Sophia Burset, a trans woman sent to prison for credit-card fraud.
– The first openly transgender person to appear on the cover of Time magazine.
– The first openly transgender person to have a wax figure of herself at Madame Tussauds.
It’s a busy time for Cox who hosted the GLAAD Media Awards in New York City last weekend and dazzled in multiple gowns.
Season 4 of OITNB will begin streaming on Netflix on June 17 and Cox will star in Fox’s remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in the fall as Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
K. Martinez says:
Thanks or the heads up, Greg. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for her CBS show. Love watching and listening to her! Laverne Cox is one of my favorites in the industry right now. Very classy!
