White House spokesman Robert Gibbs clueless and dismissive on DOMA question

I’m so glad The Advocate has a full-time reporter in Washington D.C. covering The White House. The importance of this was made even more clear on Monday when during the daily briefing, The Advocate’s Kerry Eleveld asked Press Secretary Robert Gibbs about President Barack Obama’s election promises regarding the Defense Of Marriage Act.

Gibbs’ answer to a reasonable question was an embarrassment to the administration and, unfortunately, an indication of what we are dealing with. Here is the exchange:

Eleveld: “The President supported the Defense of Marriage Act — full repeal of that — during the election. Now that same-sex couples can marry in five different states, what is the President doing to make sure those marriages can be recognized at the federal level, and what’s the timeline for something like that??”

Gibbs: “I have to go check on that. I honestly dont know the answer to that.”

That is disgraceful. Imagine that kind of answer during the camaign when LGBT voters were being so heavily courted.
