“What/If” actor Juan Castano: “I think my sexual preference has gotten more fluid. I am … on the spectrum”

Juan Castano plays a gay man in the new Netflix series What/If as well as in the upcoming Tales of the City miniseries. Playing those roles and playing Zachary Quinto’s husband in the 2015 ex-gay drama I Am Michael have helped the actor realize that he is sexually fluid.

He tells NewNowNext: “I would say that for the majority of my life I identified as straight, but as I got older I think my sexual preference has gotten more fluid. I am, as my friends say, on the spectrum. When I first had to kiss another man, it was in a play in New York six or seven years ago, Minotaur. I kissed this guy, and you’re rehearsing over and over, and it didn’t feel that different from kissing a woman. Then on I Am Michael it was the same thing. It feels really nice. I think what’s important is that as long as there is a connection with a human being that feels good it doesn’t make a difference if it’s a man or a woman. I would say playing Marcos (on What/If) solidified that for me simply because spending that much time with a character you fall in love with them and what they’re going through.”

2 Remarks

  1. The piece doesn’t say if Juan is married , or in a relationship. It seems as though that would have been an important piece of information.

Since Juan Castano said that roles in which he played a gay character, and kissing men in those roles helped open him up to his own gender fluidity, I was curious as to whether Juan may have become involved in a sexual relationship with any of the co-stars he played opposite. So many times in life we read of actors who become involved in romantic relationships with their costars while working closely together on a film project. It ciuld easily have been a natural occurrence if this were the case with Juan and one of his gay co-stars, such as Zachary Quinto, perhaps.

I’m not asking for deeply personal details, but am curious as to whether this may have been the case with handsome Juan Castano. (If he was playing a gay man opposite me in a play, TV show, or movie, I’d have been quite interested in helping him to explore his sexuality off-screen, if he also showed mutual curiosity toward exploration.

Good for you, Juan. Apparently playing a gay man resonated with something within you and hopefully also gave you a safe and interesting way to explore your sexuality and feelings! ????️‍????
