In celebration of Broadway legend Harvey Fierstein’s birthday, here’s his renditions of “I Am What I Am” & “Rose’s Turn”
Today is the great Harvey Fierstein’s 69th birthday! Among his many classic shows he appeared or wrote (Torch Song trilogy, Hairspray), he wrote the book for the 1983 Broadway musical La Cage aux Folles. When the show had its second Broadway revival in 2010, Fierstein took over the role of Albin in 2011 and Chris Seiber became Georges. This was the first time Fierstein played the lead in the show he wrote. Here he is performing the anthem I Am What I Am.
As a bonus, below a clip from Stephen Sondheim’s 75th Birthday concert, “Children and Art” featuring Harvey Fierstein singing as Gypsy’s Mama Rose. But he os doing so as Tevya (he was doing Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway at the time).
