WATCH: Billy Masters’ revealing interview with Thomas Roberts and Steve Kmetko is not to be missed!
My apologies to Billy Masters for just now catching up on episodes of Billy Masters LIVE, the twice weekly web show that he launched during the pandemic as he recovered from shoulder surgery at his parent’s house. That means he’s doing the show from his childhood bedroom.
Billy has been doing his always juicy column for more than two decades and I always love seeing him at various events and parties large and small. I think the world of him. Well, he knows everyone and that means he’s been able to attract a steady stream of first-rate guests including Jenifer Lewis, Andrea Martin, Fran Drescher, Anita Pointer, Levi Kreis, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lainie Kazan, Bruce Vilanch, Marc Shaiman, Michele Lee, Charles Busch, and many more.

This 90 minute show he did last month with TV newsman Thomas Roberts, the first openly gay man to anchor a network newscast (NBC Nightly News in 2015), and Steve Kmetko who I had a mad crush on when he was a reporter for CBS2 in Los Angeles and then the longtime host of E! News Daily.
The chat is wide-ranging and goes for 90 minutes and Billy draws a lot out of his guests including several questions to Thomas about how being molested by a priest while attending Catholic high school impacted this life.
I was in the room when Thomas came out publicly at the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association convention in Miami in 2006 and hje talks about this here. He also talks about how after his brave step, CNN took away his high-profile primetime slot on Headline News and put him on an overnight shift. He also talks about his short-lived stint on Entertainment Tonight and The Insider and how it seemed they wanted him to go back into the closet.
During a glorious run on MSNBC and NBC News where Thomas showed the world what he can do and what a world class broadcast journalist he is, he was clearly openly gay and even won an Emmy for his coverage of the landmark US Supreme Court ruling making it legal for same-sex couples to get married.
Post MSNBC, Thomas was anchoring for the CBS affiliate in Atlanta but found himself jobless during the current pandemic. So he has started his own three times a week show called Gay Good News during Pride Month. It has since continued on as a weekly show that debuts each Thursday.
Anyway, watch this conversation Billy has with Thomas and Steve. I’ve now subscribed to the Billy Masters channel on YouTube and will not be missing any more episodes!
