The great Vivian Vance and William Frawley (aka I Love Lucy’s Ethel and Fred Mertz) are among the latest inductees into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame.

The star of the series, the legendary Lucille Ball, was included in the very first Hall of Fame class back in 1984 and was very emotional in her acceptance speech, sad that Vance, who died in 1979, could not be there for the momentous occasion. Desi Arnaz was inducted posthumously six years later.

Vance won an Emmy for her portrayal of Ethel Mertz and went on to once again play Ball’s sidekick in the follow-up series The Lucy Show while Frawley joined the cast of the sitcom My Three Sons. He died in 1964.

The others to be inducted are The Jeffersons and Amen star Sherman Hemsley, Real World creators Mary-Ellis Bunim and Jonathan Murray, former Walt Disney Co. CEO Michael Eisner, Sábado Gigante game-show host Don Francisco, lighting designer Bill Klages, and producer Chuck Lorre. Bunim died in 2004.

  1. Thank Goodness! Vivian and William are smiling from Heaven. And my inner “Ethel” is smiling here on earth:):)

  2. So glad they are being recognized.

Oh happy day. I love Lucy…AND these two very much deserve to be so accoladed (is that a word?) Posthumous or not, at least, future generations will know to honor these fine comedic actors as well.

Two of the greatest comedic couples in the 50’s

  5. If they are smiling down from heaven, they aren’t doing it together. Their dislike for each other was not secret! I think the honor for the two is wonderful.

  6. Ironic, since in real life Vance and Frawley absolutely hated one another, so much so that Vance is reputed to have said “champagne for everybody!” upon hearing of Frawley’s death.

OMG! Such wonderful news. Why couldn’t they have been inducted when they were alive. How they would have been thrilled. My favorite show, I love Lucy. Loved them all. They all so do deserve it.. And yes, this news makes my day, too! 😉 Love you Ricardo’s .. Love you Mertz’s.
