Video: See Virginia Senator Tim Kaine’s first speech as Hillary Clinton’s vice presidential nominee
Tim Kaine, a US senator from Virginia, has been chosen by Hillary Clinton to be her running mate and gave his first speech in that capacity on Saturday..
Kaine, 58, has a solid record supporting LGBT equality during his years in the senate and as governor of Virginia, according to the Human Rights Campaign.
He has supported same-sex marriage since 2013 and is an original co-sponsor of the Equality Act – federal legislation that would guarantee explicit, permanent protections for LGBT people under existing civil rights laws.
HRC points out that one of Kaine’s first actions as Virginia Governor in 2006 was to sign an executive order adding sexual orientation protections to the non-discrimination policy for state workers.
The vice presidential pick also recently signed onto an amicus brief in a federal court case arguing that sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination are prohibited under the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Kaine has voted in favor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and the Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA). He joined the senate just three years ago but prior to that had been Governor of Virginia, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia and Mayor of Richmond.
