Video of Andre Agassi playing the 1990 French Open final – wearing a wig he was afraid would come off

Posted yesterday about Andre Agassi playing the 1990 French Open final with a wig that was falling apart.

Knowing now what was going on makes watching video of that match versus Andres Gomez from 19 years ago all the more fascinating to watch.

Agassi was a brash 20-year-old at the top of his game who was widely expected to beat Gomez who was a decade older. Now I look at some of these points and wonder, ‘Would Agassi have lunged for that ball had he not been afraid of flipping his wig?”

Honestly, I think this whole wearing a wig that might fall off thing in the final of a grand slam tournament is far more interesting than Andre’s disclosure in his new book Open that he has used drugs while on tour and lied to officials when he had a positive drug test.

This second picture is when it all came full circle for Andre in Paris.

He had shaved his head and had no concerns about a wig when he played in the final of the French Open in 1999.

He won in five sets, a victory that completed his collection of all four grand slam titles as well as the Olympic Gold Medal. No other male player has accomplished this. The only female player to do this? Agassi’s wife, Steffi Graf, who also won the 1999 French title.

One Remark

  1. It is interesting to watch that video knowing now about the wig. You’re right. He doesn’t seem to be lunging much, which probably cost him in the end. Thanks for sharing the clip, Greg!
