Video flashback: Bob Costas interviews Bea Arthur
All kinds of Bea Arthur videos are surfacing and I like this one a lot. It’s a visit she paid to Bob Costas when he was the host of NBC’s Later show which followed Leno and Letterman. This is a terrific conversation from 1989 and they cover a lot of Maude in this clip.
Before Carson Daly and Greg Kinnear, it was Costas who hosted the Later show on NBC and he was damned good at it. It was just a conversation without a studio audience and it made for very intimate atmosphere.

Costas has never been better than he was on Later … and with 80 minutes plus commercials a week he could spend them all with someone like Arthur or Mel Brooks and conduct something more than even James Lipton gets these days. The Comfy Chairs were some of the best celebrity interviews on TV bar none.
