Van Hansis talks to AfterElton.com about Dr. Oliver: “There are definite feelings for Reid on [Luke's] part”
Three-time Emmy nominee Van Hansis has been outstanding as gay teen and now gay man Luke Snyder on As the World Turns which will end its long run in September.
Van tells AfterElton.com that in the end, he’d like to see Luke end up with the love of his life, Noah Meyer (Jake Silbermann). But fans (including me!) are quite excited about his budding romance with sexy Dr. Reid Oliver (Eric Sheffer Stevens).
Here is a portion of what he has to say about Reid:
AE: What is it about Reid that appeals to Luke? Is it more about that he’s not with Noah or is it just about him?
VH: No, I think what appeals to Luke is that Reid is a challenge. I also think he really actually enjoys Reid’s snarkiness, you know, Reid’s nastiness. I think he has a little bit of that himself and it’s fun. They have a good verbal banter and I also I think he is kind of on the rebound right now and Reid’s there, but I do think there are definite feelings for Reid on his part.
AE: Are you enjoying working with Eric?
VH: Oh, yeah – he’s fantastic. He’s a great actor, really fun guy.
AE: Because his character came on and people just really liked him.
VH: I know, this usually doesn’t happen, but I think that’s a testament to Eric and also I think he’s a very unique character. There aren’t [many] soap characters who can come on and basically insult everybody in town and still have a lot of the audience on their side. It’s very rare. But the character is a lot of fun. I think lots of people, even if they hate him, it’s like a love-to-hate kind of thing.

I’m not at all surprised that Van feels that Noah and Luke should end up together. They probably will, but I hope that the final journey in getting that pairing together in the end is entertaining and not just slapped on at the last minute.

Van Hansis is the best actor on daytime today and, in the future, I hope he will be incredibly fabulous. Josh Duhamel signed up for All My Children for three years and said that that was IT. And it was. Soon, he was doing movies and had his own show that ran for about five years. I know Van is much better than Josh. I’m pulling for Van with every fiber of my being. Directors? Want a gem? Get Van Hansis!! Oh, and we don’t like Noah much these days.

I know Van is personal friends with Jake and feels obligated to make the statement he wishes Luke and Noah end up together but the fans beg to differ!!! Im proud to say, nearly ALL of us have come over to team LuRe and think Luke and Reid are perfection together!!! Of course, the fans could NEVER accept Luke with NOah after seeing LuRe. Too bad the show tried to appease the Nuke fans by killing Dr. Oliver instead of giving LuRe the happy ending they (and we) deserve. Over amonth later I am STILL so upset over this ending. LuRe is the absolute BEST couple I have ever seen!!

@linda, what the hell are you talking about? Everybody I know and who’s been watching this since Van first appeared on ATWT, or at least since Luke and Noah met, noticed immediately that Dr. Reid was only put on to distort Luke’s and Noah’s characters and their yearslong history and to throw the yearslong gay couple under the bus. In the end, the writers/producers who sank this show got what they obviously wanted: a 100% gay-free finale, no gay kissing, sex, romance. Now, that was a success! ((
