US Open: Revenge is sweet for Federer!

CHAMPIONSHIP FORM: In what had to be one of his sweetest victories during a very trying year, Roger Federer beat his Wimbledon conqueror Jo-Wilfried Tsonga tonight to advance to the semifinals of the US Open for the eighth straight year.

Federer, a five-time US Open champion, had lost to Tsonga in five-sets in the Wimbledon quarterfinals in July. After Federer reached the French Open final in June, it looked as if he would be one of the favorites to win Wimbledon, a tournament he has won six times.

This time, the 30-year-old champ methodically took down the Frenchman 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.

He will next face top-seed Novak Djokovic in Saturday’s semifinals. The Serbian star has amassed a staggering 63-2  record this year but one of those two losses was to Federer in the French semis. The other was earlier this summer when he retired in a final against Andy Murray.

I think this semi-final will be epic! Federer is so motivated and this is his last chance to extend his streak of winning at least one grand slam title a year since 2003.

Whatever happens, I’m looking forward to some great tennis.
