Two weeks after finishing cancer treatment, Martina Navratilova wins invitational doubles at Wimbledon!

Martina Navratilova Of USA (R) And Jana Novotna Of Czech Republic Celebrate Winning The Ladies Invitational DoublesWimbledon and Martina Navratilova have long had a special relationship.

It was at the All England Club in 1978 that Martina won the first grand slam singles title of her career and she would go on to win eight more times with her ninth title coming in 1990 at the age of 33.

She also won the Wimbledon women’s doubles seven times with various partners including Chris Evert, Billie Jean King and Pam Shriver and won four mixed doubles crowns with the most recent coming in 2003.

Now that she has “retired,” Martina comes to Wimbledon each year to do commentary and to play in the women’s invitational tournament. Earlier today, she teamed with Jana Novotna to win another title over former rival Tracy Austin and her partner Kathy Rinaldi.

What makes this latest victory all the more impressive is the 53-year-old Martina just finished radiation treatment for breast cancer two weeks ago and is still feeling the effects with sapped energy and pain from where a lymph node was removed.

But Martina, ever the warrior, defied doctor’s orders and competed in the tournament and, of course, emerged a winner.
