TV’s Greg Brady makes ill-advised Bruce Jenner joke: ‘I’m going transgender’

This is worse than the time Greg Brady was caught with cigarettes in his jacket pocket.

Barry Williams, the actor who played eldest son Greg on the 1969-74 sitcom and several of its subsequent incarnations, stuck his foot in his mouth this week while promoting his new reality show.

Williams, 60, told HuffPost Live that he would consider ‘going transgender’ like Bruce Jenner to get higher ratings.

Said Williams: ‘That guy [Bruce Jenner] is committed. He is committed to promoting himself. And I’m thinking, maybe, I don’t know, I could say — I’m just saying, if this thing doesn’t work, and the series isn’t doing as well as I want, I’m going transgender.’

When host Ricky Camilleri reminded Williams that transitioning is a ‘difficult emotional process,’ he remained in a joking mood and said: ‘I’m an actor, I can handle it.’

Williams new show, A Very Barry Branson, premieres on Great American Country on Thursday.

  1. I think Barry is pretty crass. He obviously doesn’t have much sensitivity towards the transsexual community. If he is wanting ratings, I hope he isn’t planning on taking the right wing “Duck Dy-nasty” route.

  2. Oh c’mon…it wasn’t offensive. I’m a gay man and I KNOW that if Kathy Griffin had made this comment or Joan Rivers (before her death) people would be laughing. I think we all need to get a thicker skin and pick our battles. This generation of “speech police” is way out of control and touch with reality. Had he said he hated trannies and thought they should be denied civil rights, then I could see people getting upset…but this is nothing.

  3. I agree with Steve. It wasn’t offensive, just kind of ignorant.

Trying to be funny and failing big time was as Paul wrote just kind of ignorant. Like trying to find a way of getting out of bad press for his new show of course he is an actor so let’s just let it go as ill-timed humor. Folks who want to be shocked simply want to be shocked that is what they live for.
