Trailer for “Valentine’s Day” gives no hint Bradley Cooper and Eric Dane are film’s gay couple
When I went to the movies the other day, the trailer for the romantic comedy Valentine’s Day was shown.
I saw all kinds of stars in the trailer including Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, Eric Dane, Taylor Lautner, Anne Hathaway, Jaime Foxx, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Garner, Ashton Kutcher, Patrick Dempsey, Kathy Bates, Taylor Swift, Jessica Alba, George Lopez, Shirley MacLaine and Queen Latifah, among others.
I was excited to see so many of my favorite stars but felt sad because all I saw were scenes of heterosexual love. I don’t expect there to be a gay couple in every Hollywood film – imagine that! – but with so many characters and couples, it seemed like there should be at least one same-sex couple in the mix.
Well, in reading an item on AfterElton.com today, I’ve learned that there is a gay couple in the movie portrayed by heartthrobs Bradey Cooper and Eric Dane. The trailer gives you no inkling of this – not a single frame of the two men on screen together! In fact, I assumed Cooper’s character was with Roberts and the voiceover makes this deliberately misleading it would seem.
I’m glad sites like AfterEltion are keeping score because this kind of thing is infuriating and really, just plain silly. They point out how there has been an attempt to make A Single Man – a movie about a gay man grieving his dead lover – not a gay movie.
I know it’s all about business and studios do not want to lose a single ticket sale to any homophobes who might be turned off by same-sex love. Just get ’em in their seats then hit ’em over the head with it I reckon.
I’m so annoyed with this that posting beefcake shots of Dane and Cooper was needed to put me back in a good mood. Here are the not-a-gay-in-sight trailers:
