Totally Random Video: When closeted Rock Hudson feigned being gay in a scene with Doris Day in “Pillow Talk”

http://www.reelfilm.com/images/pilltalk.jpgIt’s been so long since I’ve seen Pillow Talk, the classic 1959 romantic comedy starring Rock Hudson and Doris Day.

I barely remember it!

Miss Day received the only Oscar nomination of her career for her performance as Interior decorator Jan Morrow who shares a phone line with composer Brad Allen (Hudson). Brad keeps the line occupied all day talking to his girlfriends and the animosity between he and Jan – who he has never met – builds up. But when he sees Jan, he poses as an innocent Texan country boy named Rex Stetson to win her.

While surfing YouTube the other day, I came across this scene from the film which is just filled with irony since we now know that Hudson was leading a very active gay life off-screen.

Brad is suggesting to Jan that Rex may be gay but, of course, never says the word. Here is part of the dreadful dialogue:

Brad: “Well, there are some men who are just very devoted to their mothers. You know, the type that likes to collect cooking recipes, exchange bits of gossip.”

Jan: “What a VISCIOUS thing to say! … You are SICK!”

Cut to the next scene and Rock, as Rex, asks her about fabrics and drinks with his pinkie sticking out. Then he tries some dip, pronounces it very tasty and wonders if he could get the recipe to surprise his mom with.

Then Doris asks him why he hasn’t even tried to kiss her. His reply: “I wouldn’t want to do anything that would spoil our friendship.”

It’s all just ghastly!
