Dearest Greg,
Every time I see the movie I am a hot mess at the movie’s end.
I am 66 and know how it was to be gay in the 60s One could lose their job, their friends, their family, and even be committed to a mental institution, shock therapy… I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s.
In the movie, you had Jack who was not ashamed of who he was and wanted to take the next step with Ennis who could not come to terms with his sexuality. A lot of that was internal and societal. Both Ennis and Jack both paid the price. I don’t want to give away any spoilers but watch the transformation of the denim shirt on the hanger in the middle of the film and how it was at the end of the movie in Ennis’ trailer. Brings me to tears every time.
Greg you work at a college and it must be refreshing to see college students express their gayness with boldness. I am happy to see young people come into their true selves earlier. May they never forget their gay history and how those before them fought, marched, and spoke out to gain the freedoms they now have.
Best,
Victor
