Throwback Thursday: “Maude” fights for gay rights

It’s become well-known that the late, great Beatrice Arthur was a staunch supporter of the LGBTQ community. After her death in 2009, the two-time Emmy winner left an endowment to the Ali Forney Center, an organization for homeless LGBT youth in New York City. In turn, a new 18-bed shelter on the Lower East Side, was named in her honor. This clip is from her first classic sitcom, Maude, and it features the title character taking her bigoted next door neighbor Arthur (Conrad Bain) to a gay bar.
