Three-time groom Rudy Giuliani plans to go to bat against gay marriage in probable run for NY guv

I’m so not a fan of Rudy Giuliani who has  come out strongly against Gov. David Paterson’s proposed gay marriage bill in New York.

In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, no one can argue that then NYC mayor had his finest hour as he kept the city informed and displayed wonderful leadership during the worst of times. But since then, it seems to me that the man has done nothing but squander his political capital.

He wimped out on running against Hillary Clinton for the senate – I know he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer but I also think he didn’t want to face a likely defeat. Then he went from being a leading candidate in a wide-open field to become the Republican candidate for president to being 0ne of the worst campaigners on the stump. He started late and gave up early. A low point was when he was in the middle of a press conference and got a call on his cell phone from his third wife. He answered it.

That’s right, his third wife. And this guy is against gay marriage. Giulani is thinking of running for governor (unless he thinks he’ll lose, of course) and told the New York Post:  “I think gay marriage will obviously be an issue for any Republican next year because Republicans are either in favor of the position I’m in favor of, civil unions, or in many cases Republicans don’t even favor civil unions . . . Marriage, I believe, both traditionally and legally, has always been between a man and a woman and should remain between a man and woman . . . let’s have civil unions but not go so far as to change the definition of marriage.”

Meanwhile, two of Giuliani’s close friends, Howard Koeppel and Mark Hsaio, are planning to go to Connecticut next month to tie the knot. The former mayor lived with them for six months after he left second wife Donna Hanover. But the gay couple are no bad-mouthing their “friend.”

Politico is reporting today that Giuliani’s comments generated a quick backlash from gay rights groups, which had considered Giuliani an ally during his days in Gracie Mansion.

Steve Ralls, spokesman for Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians & Gays, asserted Giuliani was “staking out positions simply for political gain” and called his stance “an almost unprecedented flip-flop for a politician who was once viewed as one of the most moderate, and most gay-friendly, voices in the Republican Party.”

Human Right Campaign President Joe Solmonese said:  “One would think that Rudy would understand the importance of having the chance, or in his case, the chances, to marry the one you love. But more importantly, according to today’s Siena poll he’s as much out of touch with [New York] voters on this issue, as he was with Republican primary voters on every other issue.”

It looks as though, once again, Giuliani is going to blow his chance at regaining public office. I’m thinking he should find something else to do with hios time.
