Thomas Roberts manages to get a few words in edgewise as a guest panelist on “The View”
I pity anyone who sits between Joy Behar, Sherri Shepherd and Elisabeth Hasselbeck as a panelist on The View.
These women are so used to talking over each other that getting your point across is no easy task!
But Thomas Roberts, the out newsman currently anchoring on NBC and MSNBC, bravely joined those three ladies and guest moderator D.L. Hughely on today’s show.
With Whoopi Goldberg is on vacation and Barbara Walters recovering from heart surgery, the show has been welcoming a series of guest panelists – including some men!
Thomas’s first words on the show were “bring on the crazy” and at one point asked Joy to do her “So what? Who cares?” routine.
When he talked a little bit about World Cup but seemed out of his comfort zone, I wondered if many of the viewers knew then that Thomas is gay! If they did not, he made it clear when he mentioned that he came out 10 years ago at the age of 27.
When Joy asked if he had dated women before that, Thomas said “I dated women so I could throw off any signs that people might think that I was gay. … I didn’t want to be honest about it.”
Thomas pointed out that here it is the year 2010 and gay people still cannot donate blood: “If a gay man can’t donate blood, what else can’t we do? We can’t get married, we can’t do this, we can’t do that.”
I’m glad he managed to make a few important points amid the din!

I didn’t even suspect he was gay until he said it from his own mouth. He passes extremely well. Good-looking and well-spoken, he was. They should have him on more often.

He came out probably about 3 years ago. He was also sexually abused by a priest when he was a teenager which he’s been very open about and even did a special on CNN with Anderson Copper concerning the topic. Oddly enough, shortly after he came out he left CNN for what reasons I don’t know. I’m glad he’s on MSNBC now. MSNBC has a lot of gay anchors as does CNN.

Oh by the way, I think he’s one hell of a great roll model for kids out there.
