Thomas Roberts launches new MSNBC show this week – could he become NBC’s first openly gay anchor?

Caught MSNBC Live with Thomas Roberts today and I gotta say, it’s so great to be able to see him again in a timeslot in the middle of the day.

I did catch Thomas on Way Too Early and Morning Joe but only rarely and when I had insomnia.

He’s what a news anchor should be – very smart and very able to react to what is happening around him whether it be breaking news or an interview.

Thomas’ new show replaces the canceled Ronan Farrow Daily and The Reid Report in the cable network’s 1-3 pm timeslot (10 am – noon Pacific).

I’m not watching The View so much with Rosie O’Donnell gone so Thomas will be a good replacement.

‘This is the sweet spot,’ Roberts tells The Advocate in an interview posted Tuesday. ‘Early afternoon on the East Coast, late morning on the West Coast, in between Today and Nightly News, where we’ll cover whatever develops.’

Roberts has been openly gay since coming out publicly nearly 10 years ago while an anchor for CNN Headline News. His career had a rocky period for a few years after that – including a short-lived gig with The Insider – but he has rebounded magnificently.

So much so that there are those who wonder if his ability to anchor breaking news – not to mention his handsome looks – might lead to him one day landing in the anchor chair for NBC Nightly News.

‘They haven’t called yet,’ he says. ‘It would be historic, and I am willing and able. But right now I’m focused on this (new show). I’m working in the land of opportunity.’

With Brian Williams’ future uncertain, it would be nice to see Thomas as an occasional substitute for Lester Holt to see how it goes. I predict it would be a good fit!

2 Remarks

  1. I really miss Thomas Roberts on “Way Too Early.” But I am glad he’s got better hours. The one thing that I enjoyed the most was getting to know about Robert’s sense of humor. He would often cut up with Louis Burgdorf in the segment called “The Cooler” and Bill Karins, the Weather. The three really made my day! As I have posted before, Thomas Roberts is “prime-time” – one of the best in the field.
