Thomas Roberts and Kelly Ripa honored at star-studded GLAAD Media Awards in New York City

The New York City edition of the GLAAD Media Awards took place earlier tonight and looked to be a star-studded affair.

The Silver Fox himself Anderson Cooper was on hand to present the Excellence in Media Award to his good pal Kelly Ripa while MSNBC star anchor Thomas Roberts received the Vito Russo Award from Wonder Woman star Lynda Carter.

Roberts, 42, came out as gay in 2006 and said of that time: “It was liberating, and frightening as hell.”

“People like me were considered immoral at best, a joke, and being it meant being an outcast,” he said. “Coming out wasn’t without its missteps, but after a storm, you can hope for a rainbow — or in my case, a colorful peacock.”

Ripa, co-host of the daily Live With Kelly and Michael, reflected that she thought it a bit odd that “I should be celebrated for treating people like people.”
