The Young and the Restless: After decades in the closet (and faking his own death!) Phillip Chancellor comes out to Katherine and Jill
It’s scenes like this that show why, after a 20 year absence, Thom Bierdz decided to return to The Young and the Restless as Phillip Chancellor. On today’s show, he came 0ut to his mother and grandmother and here is some of what he said:
Jill wanted to know, first of all, why he had hidden his sexuality from his family. I thought his answer made a lot of sense – even for a daytime soap opera!
“It was the late 80s, I was young. I was trapped in who I was supposed to be, who i was pretending to be,” he said. ” i wasn’t confused about being gay, I knew who I was and I knew i had to hide it being a Chancellor.”
Katherine at one point remarks: “For heaven’s sakes Phillip, we’re not bumpkins, you could have trusted us.”
Phillip points out: “You wouldn’t have been (okay), it was a different time. Genoa City is conservative, you would not have been okay with it. if I stayed here, it wouldn’t have worked.”

Thanks for sharing this – I was (and still am) a huge fan of Thom’s. It’s amazing they can pick up the story line, 20 years later, with the same cast!
Point of clarification, though – Katherine is not Phillip’s grandma. She’s not even a blood relative – she was simply married to Phillip’s dad who was sleeping with Jill. 🙂

Thanx Greg – Jim K’s comment reminded me how convuluted the plot is. Phillip 3 was supposedly switched at birth by Katherine. Years later, Cane(Daniel Goddard) came to Genoa City and claimed to be Phillip 3. DNA tests proved that he was the stolen baby-the real Phillip 3. Now that Phillip is back, and the imposter Cane has been revealed, they’re completely glossing over the switched baby story because that would make Phillip 3(Thom Bierdz) not a Chancellor. Confusing. Also, Jill, Phillip 3’s mother, was found not to be Katharine’s daughter. PS. How about Daniel Goddard as “morning man?”

It’s amazing…everyone on the show has aged 20 years…while I have only aged FOUR! (Thanks, Carol Burnett, for that line!)
I used to watch this show in the 70’s. Paul and Nikky were an item back then, those two young cuties! MMM, Paul! But….that soap became the Darkest, Dreariest, Bore!! Slo-o-o-ow, ridiculous plots, and Eric Braeden is the Worst Actor of all soapdom! HOW many years has he been in this country, and he Still can’t speak the language?!!
Anyway….it was so different with Jamie Lyn Bauer…and Tom Selleck! Those were the days of the soap!!
