The night Donna Summer sang “Superstar” at The Hollywood Bowl accompanied by Richard Carpenter
Donna Summer first sold out The Hollywood Bowl back in 1979 and had continued to do so as recently as 2008.
In the summer of 2010, I was among those who were fortunate enough to see her perform there for what I believe was the last time.
I’ll never forget it/
Here’s part of what I wrote about that night on this blog back then and Donna’s performance of the Carpenters classic Superstar:
The first thing I want to say is this: Donna Summer and Richard Carpenter please, please, please get together and record Superstar.
At last night’s Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame Concert, these two inductees collaborated on the classic Carpenters hit and it was what I would call beautiful music. Donna made the song her own but stayed to the spirit of the original recorded by Richard and his sister, the late, great Karen Carpenter.

Karen always liked Donna and vice versa. Hope they’re now finally singing together in heaven.

I’m still in a state of shock and sadness about Donna passing away. I have every album she ever recorded, and I sure hope there’s unreleased stuff out there that will come to light in the future.
Donna was such a classy, lovely, intelligent woman. I will miss her very, very much.

I am in shock. Donna Summer & K.C. are my biological parents…Gloria Gaynor threw out the key…God took away my mother way too soon…

I was/am a fan of both Donna Summer & CARPENTERS. I had the pleasure of working with Karen & Richard several time. Karen and I became friends. Her friendship is something I still cherish today. Attending her funeral was one of the hardest days of my life. I was invited to attend this special evening at The Bowl and it was truly magical! I haven’t seen this performance since that special night. I just cried now as I did then. Loosing both of these 70’s icons too early in life and career is tragic. So grateful to have been touched by them both. It’s been a privilege.
