http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/252/43497975.pngIt is criminal that in her long and hugely successful recording career, Diana Ross has never won a Grammy.

I mean, even Hillary Rodham Clinton has a Grammy!

This huge oversight will finally be rectified this year when the great star receives the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy. She will be presented with the honor an invitation-only ceremony to be held on Feb. 11 and will be acknowledged during the Grammy Awards telecast the next night.

I certainly hope they allow Miss Ross to take the stage and make a speech and show clips or better yet, ask her to perform. Too often, musical legends are just asked to stand as the audience applauds.

We want more!

Miss Ross has won eight American Music Awards but never the Grammy despite 12 nominations. Her recording career has spanned nearly 50 years.  She enjoyed 12 number one hits as lead singer of The Supremes including Baby Love, Reflections, Stop! In the Name of Love and You Can’t Hurry Love then went on to have six number one singles as a solo artist including Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, Love Hangover, Do You Know Where You’re Going To and Endless Love.

In addition to Miss Ross, other Lifetime Achievement honorees will include the Allman Brothers Band, Glen Campbell, Antonio Carlos Jobim, George Jones, the Memphis Horns, and Gil Scott-Heron.

Let’s enjoy some of my favorite Diana Ross performances to celebrate her Grammy:

  1. About time too ! Criminal neglect that she hasn’t been recognised sooner.

  2. As much as I love Diana, looking back I can somewhat understand her not winning the Grammy. A lot of times she was overshadowed by h er competition with their deep, soulful, almost gospel like voices. While Diana has a more polished, pop feel to hers. In the r & b category, that worked against her. But she and Lionel Richie definitely deserved it for “Endless Love”.
Sad thing is that the Lifetime Achievement Award winners are not acknowledged during the telecast with a speech, only a brief mention on air.
At least, she is getting her due.

  3. I have to disagree with you Robin. She deserved it for so many of her hits. Missing You should have won Best R&B Female vocal- who knows who beat her-Diana’s classic is still played on radio today.Ease on Down the Road- robbed, Lady Sings the Blues soundtrack-robbed, Endless Love -robbed, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough-robbed, and so many more. The Academy is trying to make up for a slight that never should have happened in the first place. Arists without one tenth of her talent or impact have scored numerous Grammys and you never hear their music, bur I always hear Diana and 50 plus years of hits.

  4. I agree with Mr. Greg Hernandez that it is criminal that Diana Ross never won a Grammy Award. I hope that she is just not just mentioned for applause, please Grammy Awards writers and producers, don’t dissapoint us.
After being robbed so many times, the least that the Academy should do is let her perform, show clips of her long and beautiful career, and have someone like Berry Gordy or Oprah present her the award. Something really nice and extravagant should be done.

  5. Miss Diana Ross is a world wide entertainer who has achieved so much more then others and has not been recognized. Since the Supremes she has had been on television, movies, world concerts, and the list goes on and on. For the Grammy’s not to recognizew here talent speaks volumes about them for not giving her a grammy that she highly deserves. Not only should she perform, they need to create an new introduction of 50 year career and have Oprah present her with it. That is the lest they could do for she should have won many grammy’s.

  6. it is criminal that this legendrey icon has been overlooked for so long, what other women in pop history has had the impact of miss ross and the legacy,i would say none, miss diana ross is the quintisensial superstar supreme period, look at the list of wannabees that have won grammys it is laughable the grammys should be ashamed of themselves, miss ross is the greatest.

The question of the hour, “What took you so long?” I’ve listened to many young singers throughout the years, and none is of the caliber of Miss Ross. This lady is the consumated professional. She has labored long and hard in the vinyard. She is truly deserving of this Award. By receiving this award, the Grammy Trustees, are rememying the many years of over-sight. Even this Lifetime Achievement Grammy, is long overdue…all I can say is this; better late then never. Congratulations Miss Ross…Thank you for all the years of love you have given us.

  8. It s about time. Diana is one of the FEW International SUPERSTARS. Seriously a lot of artist are known in their countries and several others maybe , but Ross has been an international world superstar for 50 years, and still performing sold out concerts. While others have garnered extensive recognition and praised as the best this, the pop that, the queen this- all respect to them. The world and the entertainment industry knows who the true SUPERSTAR is………..having conquered recordings( various materials and styles), television specials, television movie, big screen movies, a one woman show on broadway and the global concert stage. THere is only one. DIANA.

It seems as if the 2011 deaths of Gil Scott Heron and Steve Jobs made them “shoe ins” for their awards yet it’s taken NARAS 50 years to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of Diana Ross. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled that Miss Ross is receiving the Lifetime GRAMMY (and I’m definitely grateful that she’s alive to accept it!) but it just seems unfair. It always seems as if other Motown artists are honored BEFORE Miss Ross; quite often she’s given the same prestigious award AFTER them (the Kennedy Center Honor being a good example.) It’s as if she were a footnote or something. When will people realize that Miss Ross is the blueprint for many aspiring and successful entertainers?

    Bill Hootnick says:

This is the award Diana Ross has waited for her entire career. I can’t wait to see her accept this much deserved award (hopefully during the telecast). Maybe even Mary Wilson & Cindy Birdsong will be there to share in this award since they were a big part of the music that will live on forever and maybe there will even be a dedication to Florence Ballard. Not to take away from Diana’s solo career (which spans 41 years) but if it had not been for The Supremes, there wouldn’t be Diana Ross.

  11. I’m a major Diana Ross fan, I was shocked when I learned a few years ago that she NEVER won a Grammy. I still find it shocking, from the Supremes to her solo recording career, the woman was the top of the game for years and has the fans and music sales to prove it. Thank God this wonderful woman and artist is FINALLY getting a darn Grammy. Even impostors have won grammy’s in the past. She should also be a OSCAR winner but I won’t go there. Much love to the BOSS Diana Ross.

  12. So Happy to see Diana Ross get a Grammy Long Overdue !
She should have won many by now . Hoping the Academy gives
Diana Ross a chance to perform or have a tribute to her with
performers honoring her . She desearves it ! One of the Best
Female Entertainers of All Time !!

  13. Obviously, this was an ergreious mistake for the Grammys to have waited this long to acknowledge Ross properly. I am sure this is an attempt to correct some of this institution’s mis-steps, like awarding Milli Vilinni an award, and the Grammys wont be able to make-up for all the times that Ross should have won, like when she was nominated for “Ain’t No Moutain High Enough,” but at least we all get to experience a moment that many have declared as long overdue and witness a moment of magic because their have been winners who have come and gone but somehow the Ross legacy in music has persisted. In fact, Ross has become so successful that in reality this Grammy will be irrelevent to her enduring career and probably do more for the Grammy Awards than for her. Either way, its a way for the academy to finally say thank you Miss Ross for the Best Years Of our Lives.”
