The late Lucille Ball on gay rights: “It’s perfectly all right with me. … How can you knock it?”
It’s no secret that a huge part of the I Love Lucy fanbase is gay men.
Perhaps we relate to Lucy’s constant attempts to defy Ricky’s oppression of her showbiz dreams and bask in her bond with Ethel.
Whatever it is, we love her.
But how did Lucille Ball, who died 30 years ago today, feel about us?
The unearthing of 1980 interview she did with People Magazine provides the answer.
The then-68-year-old comedy legend was asked how she felt about women’s rights and gay rights.
On the women’s movement: “They can use my name for equal rights, but I don’t get out there and raise hell because I’ve been so liberated I have nothing to squawk about.” On gay rights: “It’s perfectly all right with me. … How can you knock it?”
