The great Helen Reddy of “I Am Woman” fame has died – the Grammy winner was 78
Grammy winner Helen Reddy has died at the age of 78.
She was one of my all-time favorite singers.
Her children said in a statement: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Helen Reddy, on the afternoon of September 29th 2020 in Los Angeles. She was a wonderful Mother, Grandmother and a truly formidable woman. Our hearts are broken. But we take comfort in the knowledge that her voice will live on forever.”
Miss Reddy was one of the biggest recording stars in the world in the 1970s with such hits as I Am Woman, Delta Dawn, I Don’t Know How to Love Him, You and Me Against the World, Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress), Angie Baby, Ain’t No Way to Treat a Lady, Somewhere in the Night and You’re My World.
She also appeared in films (Pete’s Dragon, Airport 1975), on stage (Blood Brothers) and hosted TV’s The Midnight Special.
I was able to see her perform in Blood Brothers on London’s West End in 1997 and not to many years later got to talk to her about it at a book signing in Santa Monica that had a lengthy Q&A. She told us she was retired from performing. But then eight years ago, after a decade of retirement from performing, Miss Reddy returned to the stage. I saw her perform twice since then at Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood and was astounded that her voice was completely intact. She could hit every beautiful note she ever did.
Let’s celebrate her life with with some of her songs:

Tommy Marx says:
I just saw that Helen Reddy died. And my first thought was, I hope Greg’s okay. Helen was an extraordinary singer, a champion of equality, and from all accounts a wonderful person. She will be sorely missed, but her music will live on. Two of my favorite songs are “You and Me Against the World” (I used to play that all the time on the piano growing up) and “Ain’t No Way to Treat a Lady”, one of many empowering songs she released.
She will be sorely missed.

I love that woman.
One of the first records I bought as a child (not the album style of vinyl but the 45 RPM size disc of vinyl) was the song Delta Dawn by Helen Reddy. I remember playing it over and over, too.
