The Clint Eastwood-directed “J Edgar,” written by Dustin Lance Black, will open AFI Fest on Nov. 3
The American Film Institute has announced that J. EDGAR, directed by AFI Life Achievement Award recipient and Academy Award-winning director Clint Eastwood, will have its world premiere as the Opening Night Gala of AFI FEST 2011.
The film stars Academy Award nominee Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role, along with Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts, Armie Hammer and Oscar winner Judi Dench.
It is produced by Academy Award winners Eastwood and Brian Grazer, and Oscar nominee Robert Lorenz.
From an original screenplay by Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black, the film explores the public and private life of one of the most powerful, controversial and enigmatic figures of the 20th century, J. Edgar Hoover, founding director of the FBI.
“Clint Eastwood is an American icon – one whose work as a director, actor, producer and composer not only stands the test of time, but also continues to add new, rich chapters with each passing year,” said Bob Gazzale, President and CEO of the American Film Institute. “What a gift it is to be going to the movies when Clint Eastwood is making them, and what an honor it is for the American Film Institute to premiere his latest contribution to America’s cultural legacy.”

‘J Edgar’ looks fantastic! Didn’t even know this project was on the horizon! Didn’t even know this was on the horizon. I did know about another Brian Grazer project – about mobsters in 1950’s Miami: a TV mini-series , to be called “Magic City.”
Could be that the film “J Edgar” will cover some of the same turf as Magic City: J Edgar Hoover loved the racetrack and Hialeah Racetrack could be in both projects. Also, Miami, mobsters, gamblers, hit-men, Sam Trafficante, showgirls-cabana boys, a gorgeous 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Seville. The Fountainbleau Hotel.
Not to mention — for the movie, which is why I cannot wait for it: DiCaprio, Naomi Watts, Judi Dench (Hey – how did Judi Dench get in there?) Looks good. Thank you Clint Eastwood!

Oops. “Magic City” is a Mitch Glazer project, not a ‘Brian Grazer’ opus. So solly. ‘Magic City’ is being filmed in Miami, and looks like an awesome big budget show, kinda like a movie would be. It may not have anything whatsoever to do with J Edgar Hoover, a film by the esteemed Mr. Grazer/Clint Eastwood.
But maybe they’ll work in that angle. Who knows? “Magic City” will be on STARZ in 2012. Hope it doesn’t conflict with “AWAKE” on NBC because that is what I’m really looking forward to. Also ‘Prime Suspect,’ with Maria Bello. Bye Greg. Have a nice day.
