“Tales of the City” author Armistead Maupin gets candid about “My Relationship with Rock Hudson”

Armistead Maupin describes this video: I revisit a relationship that began in desire and grew into friendship, exploring how connection, honesty, and care reshaped both their lives. I’ve told pieces of this story before, but I wanted to take the time to tell the whole story. This is a reflection on my relationship with Rock Hudson — how it began as an affair, grew into a friendship, and ultimately became something far more complicated and meaningful than either of us expected. Rock was one of the kindest, most attentive men I’ve ever known, and behind the public image was a deeply private person trying to survive the demands of Hollywood at a time when being openly gay was unthinkable. What struck me most about Rock was his generosity — not just emotionally, but in the way he believed everyone deserved love. He wanted me to find a partner, a life, a future, even while he himself was trapped in a world that demanded secrecy. Our friendship unfolded in quiet moments: dinners, conversations, jokes, and shared confidences, as well as in the painful realities of living in the Hollywood closet, where fear shaped everything and truth came at a cost. When Rock’s illness became public, I spoke honestly about who he was and what that life had required of him. I didn’t realize at the time how controversial that honesty would be, or how deeply it would affect others. Years later, I’ve come to understand that telling this story isn’t just about memory — it’s about visibility, courage, and the ways we quietly change each other’s lives. I remain grateful for having known him, and for the lasting mark he left on me.
