Susan Feniger is still one hot tamale!
During the early days of the Food Network – a full decade before Iron Chef etc. – I used to love to watch Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken on their show Two Hot Tamales and its follow-up series Hot Tamales World Tour. They were and are so knowlegable about food and I loved hearing their anecdotes while preparing a meal. Of course, they also have two terrific restaurants: Cuidad in downtown LA and the wonderful Border Grill in Santa Monica where my friend, the late Tim Fairfolm, was a regular.
Feniger, probably the most high-profile lesbian in the dining scene today, is opening her first restaurant on her own called Susan Feniger’s Street later this month. She and Millikan remain business partners in the other ventures. My old friend Rene Lynch over at the Los Angeles Times had an outstanding article on Susan on the cover of today’s Food section. I just read it from start to finish and got real hungry while doing it!
So why branch out on her own when her and Millikan have had such a winning formula?
Lynch writes:
About five years ago, Feniger said, she “got really clear” on her goal. It was after suffering a string of devastating personal losses that she was powerless to do anything about. When she talks about pursuing Street because she didn’t want deathbed regrets, she’s speaking from a place of knowledge.
“I lost my oldest and best friend, who had scleroderma . . . three months later, my mother passed away, and five months later our 14-year-old dog passed away and then eight months later, my father. It was just like a series of brutal, brutal times.”
Loss turned to action.
Because what else was there?
“I got to this place of just feeling like, life is just so fragile.”
It was nothing more dramatic than that.
Feniger just turned the corner.
“I went from ‘I want to do this, I’ve been wanting to do this,’ to ‘I’m going to do this.’ “
