Super Bowl champ Brendon Ayanbadejo got flack being an LGBT ally: ‘The resistance made me stronger’

That was quite a Super Bowl game yesterday and I had a great time at family party where my dad’s guacamole was perhaps his best batch yet!

I didn’t have a big favorite in the game but am happy for the Ravens victory because LGBT ally Brendon Ayanbadejo is now a Super Bowl champ.

He took the time to talk to Russell Simmons for GlobalGrind.com. in an interview after the big game.

‘Being the first pioneer publicly accepting same-sex marriage in the three major sports was difficult at first but the more people scrutinized me and ridiculed me, the stronger I became for the issue,’ he says. ‘It was like lifting weights; the resistance made me stronger, stand taller and speak louder for LGBT rights!’

Although no member of the NFL has ever come out publicly during their playing career, Ayanbadejo is optimistic.

‘The NFL culture has come a long way from four years ago,’ he says. ‘The younger generation of players are a lot more open-minded, forward thinking and accepting of the LGBT community.

Of the Super Bowl win he says: ‘I am very happy for my team, the organization, the fans and the city of Baltimore. They have been incredible to me and my family! Now it is time to make sure all families can share in the same opportunities that we can. Our work has just begun!’
