“Star Trek” icon George Takei slams Utah’s governor for saying gay couples aren’t legally married
God bless George Takei for telling it like it is.
The Star Trek icon went off on Utah’s governor, George Herbert, for putting the more than 1,300 married same-sex couples in his state in limbo by placing their marriages ‘on hold until further notice.’ The federal government, however, does recognize the marriages which took place after a federal judge declared the state’s marriage ban unconstitutional.
Takei tells the Salt Lake City Tribune: “Why is your Governor Gary Herbert so mean?” the actor asked repeatedly. “Your governor seems to believe in governing by hysteria. Your Governor Herbert is consciously bringing harm to 2,600 citizens of Utah. That’s mean-spirited. He didn’t have to do that. Your governor is trying to put toothpaste back in the tube.”
Takei, who married longtime partner Brad Altman in 2008 in California, was in Utah over the weekend for the Sundance Film Festival premiere of a documentary about his life called To Be Takei.
Below is a trailer for the film:
