“Star Trek” grosses are out of this world

I’m the furthest thing from a Trekkie that you can imagine. But with dreamy Chris Pine as Capt. Kirk in the latest Star Trek film, I’m suddenly very interested in The Enterprise. This latest film is a reboot of the franchise and scored the biggest opening weekend of any Trek film: an estimated $72.5 million.

The film dwarfed X-Men Orgins: Wolverine in its second weekend. The Hugh Jackman-Ryan Reynolds hunkfest dropped to second place with an estimated $27 million. X-Men has earned just under $130 million in its first 10 days.

Speaking of hunks, Matthew McConaughey’s latest comedy, Ghost of Girlfriend’s Past, held up surprisingly well in its second weekend with an estimated $10 million in ticket sales for a 10-day total of $30 million. That’s a huge improvement of Matthew’s previous movie, Surfer Dude, which went straight to DVD.

One Remark

  1. Actually, Surfer Dude did play in theatres…very few theatres, including one in Tampa, for about 5 minutes. Some clueless projectionist threw the trailer on to The Reader, months after it had quietly left the cineplex.
