Spotting Dolly Parton dining in Hollywood on day “Coat of Many Colors” honored by Library of Congress

So earlier tonight, my friends arrived to pick me up for a dinner at Yamashiro Restaurant in Hollywood so I didn’t have time to finish a post about how Dolly Parton’s classic song Coat of Many Colors had been added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.

So I’m getting around to it now.

But what was pretty damned ironic is that our party got to the restaurant, got seated, ordered drinks then realized there was a celebrity sitting not so far away from us: Dolly Parton!

I thought to myself, “I’ve got to congratulate her on the Library of Congress honor and also mention the documentary Hollywood to Dollywood.”

But it just wasn’t that kind of situation. Dolly was having a nice dinner with her group and I was having a nice dinner with mine and we didn’t cross paths. But a hush did come over the room when she got up to leave!

Anyway, so here is my post about Coat of Many Colors and a video of Dolly performing it way back in 1974. It is one of 25 recordings selected this year that was deemed “historically, culturally or aesthetically significant.”

The Congress said Coat Of Many Colors “affectionately recounts an impoverished childhood in the hills of Tennessee that was made rich by the love of her family.”

One Remark

  1. I love this song! It reminds me of my own childhood when my dad was out of work ,and my mom and grandma would make all our clothes from a book of patterns my sisters brought home from Home Economics class. Times were often tough for us until my dad got a union job and steady work. Thing were hard, but having a close knit family was a great blessing. Thank you Dolly for this and the many other wonderful songs you’ve written over the years. I also love the way Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt have covered it.
