So who was Christian Bale’s inspiration for his “American Psycho” performance? Tom Cruise!

Tom Cruise hasn’t jumped on a sofa or lashed out at Brooke Shields for years now.

And yet the bad PR keeps coming from unexpected places.

Not only is his Risky Business co-star Bronson Pinchot dissing him in an interview with AV Club for what he said was homophobic behavior on the set of that film more than 25 years ago, but now American Psycho director Mary Harron says in an interview with BlackBook.com that Christian Bale based part of his performance as the murderous Patrick Bateman on Cruise.

She said of her and Bale’s development of the character: “We talked about how Martian-like Patrick Bateman was, how he was looking at the world like somebody from another planet, watching what people did and trying to work out the right way to behave. And then one day he called me and he had been watching Tom Cruise on David Letterman, and he just had this very intense friendliness with nothing behind the eyes, and he was really taken with this energy.”
