Snapped! Prop. 8 plaintiffs on set of ‘When We Rise’ with TR Knight, Guy Pearce and Dustin Lance Black
I like this photo a lot. It’s from the set of the ABC miniseries When We Rise written by Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black who is also directing much of it. Pictured with Lance are two of the stars: Guy Pearce and TR Knight as well as two lovely guys who I think very highly of: Jeff Zarillo and Paul Katami. They are, of course, one of the two couples who were the lead plaintiffs in the successful Supreme Court challenge to Proposition 8 which made same-sex marriage legal again in California. This is a stellar group!

Jeff Zarillo, Paul Katami and the other couple are true LGBT heroes to me.

Is it me, or is anyone else bothered by the fact that this miniseries has not cast any openly gay (LGBTQ) actors in the lead roles? From IMDB, I can only see two (Charlie Carver & TR Knight) who each appear in only one episode. Everyone else is straight or unknown (which means they too are straight until proven otherwise). How is this progress when openly gay actors can’t even play members of their own community?
Side note-Before anyone chimes in with the clichéd “It shouldn’t matter” and “It should be the best actor for the part,” please remember two things when you make those comments: (1) you presuppose that openly gay and lesbian actors have equal consideration for all the roles they audition for (Hint: They don’t.) and (2) you also imply that straight actors are inherently more talented than non-straight ones. So much so, that they can play us better than LGBTQ actors can.
