Sigourney Weaver talks about Emmy nod for playing religious mom of gay son in “Prayers for Bobby”
Sigourney Weaver has received an Emmy nomination for her fierce performance as Mary Griffith – the mother of a gay son who she tries to “cure” with prayer – in the heartbreaking movie Prayers for Bobby.
Beck/Smith Hollywood has a nice interview with the actress and I’ve going to share a part of it with you. Miss Weaver told the column that since the movie aired on Lifetime earlier this year,“I’ve had a number of parents come up to me on the street — or sisters, brothers, or others — and say ‘Thank-you for this story. My daughter is gay, or my sister is gay…’
“That’s meant so much to me. They acknowledged what we were doing in the hope it would open some eyes. And then I read in the paper last week that the poll numbers haven’t changed about Proposition 8,” she adds, referring to California’s anti-gay marriage initiative.
“I’m still amazed it got on the ballot,” she said. “It seems so unconstitutional, to have a referendum on whether your neighbor should have the same rights as you.”
Agreed!

I cannot thank you enough times for your statement MS. Weaver. As sad but true event on the evening of 8 August 2009. In the Newscast on KVAL CBS 13 (kvalnews@kval.com)one in which David Walker the anchor felt the need to include in his segment on the Eugene Oregon Gay Pride Celebration (40 anniversary of Stonewall) to include that they had called the “Defense of Marriage” offices for a comment. Further into the broadcast Mr. Walker made a snide remark and his co-host snickered as the Anchor did a verbal put down of Transgender mayor of Silverton Oregon for the clothing choice “HE” to wear to an interview. In a letter to the Station Management and to Mr. Walker himself (Contact Us) I have suggested that he and his news team and possibly the entire staff take time for sensitivity training for what I perceive as “HOMOPHOBIA” as in my opinion neither the addition of contacting “Defense of Marriage” or to the sexuality of the mayor to the segment of the comments were in keeping with decent news reporting. It is so very true that Homophobia lives and thrives in Oregon.

I’ve seen the movie a couple of days before and I really liked it. She really is convincing in her role of a tormented mother, split between her faith and the love for her son. And she didn’t used her faith as a weapon against his beloved but as plea to convince him of her –irrational- reasons to make him try to change to a pseudo normal way. As it is based on a real story, the part that really hurt are those that shows that they allow the church preach to say that bullshit about bobby at his funeral, and the fact that the boy couldn’t handle to be away and on his own, having renounced his dream to be a writer and so on. I guess guilt is a venom that –when instilled from very young age and supported by almost an entire ignorant society- is too hard to bear for a simple, kind and young guy. Nowadays we all know that at certain places there are still bobbies in the hide of their families. Hope they find more helping hands to avoid feeling so bad.
