Showtunes Sunday: Jennifer Holliday belts out her big “Dreamgirls” number at the 1982 Tony Awards

Sorry for any confusion dear readers.

The previously announced Monday showtunes feature has been moved to Sunday (please send in any requests!) because tomorrow is the launch of Mary Mondays, a weekly dose of classic scenes from The Mary Tyler Moore Show – same idea as I Love Lucy Fridays.

Don’t worry, I’ll stop there with the themed TV show days so you won’t have to worry about a Mama’s Family Tuesday or The Facts of Life Wednesdays!

Okay, so Showtunes Sunday this week has a real doozy, one of the greatest performances at a Tony Awards telecast that I think we will ever see.

It was the year of the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls, more than 20 years before the film came out. The original Effie, Jennifer Holliday showed the world why she won the Tony Award for her unforgettable performance as the former lead singer of a Supremes-like group who does not take the news of her firing lightly.
