Showtune Sunday: Very different versions of “I Am What I Am” by Bassey, Barrowman, Gaynor and Hearn
Thought I’d shine the showtune spotlight today on a song I’ve danced to many a night at a gay club.
It’s the big power ballad I Am What I Am is a song originally introduced in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical La Cage aux Folles.
Here are four different versions of the song starting with the fantabulous Shirley Bassey who is still delivering the goods well into her 70s.
Then there is the glorious Gloria Gaynor whose other megahit, I Will Survive, is also a gay dance bar staple, Broadway babe John Barrowman’s version and finally, George Hearn who starred on Broadway in La Cage.

starting with the fantabulous Shirley Massey…
Shirley Massey? The gay police are on the way over to confiscate your gay card! I’ll assume a night of hard dancing (or drinking) cause that typo.

The Divine Diva Miss Shirley Bassey does it once again !!!!!

Greg Hernandez says:
I’ve fixed Massey! Too many stories about Chandler Massey I guess!
