Showtune Sunday: The original Fantine, Patti LuPone, sings “I Dreamed a Dream” from “Les Miserables”
The Golden Globe Awards are tonight and, chances are, Anne Hathaway will win the supporting actress prize for her performance as Fantine in Les Miserables.
So this is as good a time as any to pay tribute to the musical’s original Fantine, Miss Patti LuPone. She created the role of Fantine in Cameron Mackintosh’s original London production of Les Misérables, in 1985 and won the Olivier Award for her work.
What’s especially great about this video is the anecdote LuPone shares about missing her cue when Fantine is to return to the stage as a ghost (after two hours off the stage).
Enjoy the story and the song!

Gaspar Marino says:
Theatrical Magic…Patti, nails it again. No fancy orchestration, just a piano..no over the top emoting…just pure singing of the beautiful musice…like an opera aria, as intended. I love Anne Hathaway, but she could learn a thing or two from the divine Patti.
