Showtune Sunday: When Betty Buckley sang “Memory” from “Cats” on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show”
Betty Buckley has been one of the greatest stage stars for decades now but back in the early 80s, she was just Abby Bradford from Eight is Enough to me.
I knew her as the lady who gave advice to little Nicholas on the ABC hit and thought of her as appealing and pleasant but not much more.
Until I saw this.
Before there were a zillion channels, TiVo and even DVDs, you watched The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson before bed. And one night, the lady who was Abby on Eight is Enough walked out and sang Memory from the musical Cats which she was starring in on Broadway and for which she won a Tony Award.
She was never just Abby Bradford to me – or anyone else I’m sure – again.

Utterly, utterly thrilling! I’ve seen and heard Betty Buckley sing this at least 100 times but this performance was her very best. Edythe

Ms. Streisand couldn’t light a candle to Ms. Buckley’s performance of ‘Memory”. Brava Betty!
