Showtune Sunday: “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Garland, LaBelle, Chenoweth, Hudson and more
Kristin Chenoweth guested on The Talk and sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
So this seemed like a good time to surf through YouTube and find other versions of the classic from The Wizard of Oz.
You’ve got to start out with Judy Garland – no one can touch her.
Fun to see Patti LaBelle, who has since made it one of her signature songs, singing the song in 1966 with The Bluebells which at the time still included Cindy Birdsong. Later that year, Birdsong would become a member of The Supremes.
Which version do you like best (other than Judy’s, of course).

Just a short note. I’m not sure if you intended for it to be only for the girls today, but if not where is Sam Harris? He is the definitive “power” version of Rainbow.

Great list! I totally agree Ed Meiller!!!! I remember when he did it on Star Search lol
Ron Minor says:
Katherine McPhee was hands-down the BEST!! followed by Susan Boyle.. WOW!
Kathy says:
Sam Harris version of over the rainbow is absolutely stunning, love that version the best. He has a beautiful voice.

Frankly Greg, I’d be willing to write a sizable check if someone could guarantee me that I’d NEVER have to hear another cover version of “Over The Rainbow.” The same goes for “At Last” by Etta James. Some recordings are just so definitive that all other versions of the song seem superfluous and ridiculous by comparison.

Check out Doris Day’s terrific version of the song on I-Tunes. It’s really special.
