Showtune Sunday: Some songs from the original “Pete’s Dragon” starring Helen Reddy

Just read that there is a new Pete’s Dragon coming out starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley and Robert Redford that will hit theaters in August.

The original came out in 1977 and starred the great Helen Reddy who was then at the peak of her pop music career.

Miss Reddy had made her film debut as a singing nun in Airport 1975 but that was a small role compared to this showcase. I thought she was going to become the next Julie Andrews and star in more big screen musicals.

That didn’t happen.

But she is absolutely lovely in this film which also starred Mickey Rooney, Jim Dale, Red Buttons, Jeff Conaway, and Shelley Winters.

The highlight, of course, is when Miss Reddy sings Candle in the Water.

Doesn’t get any prettier than that!
