Showtune Sunday: Judi Dench sings a bitter “Send in the Clowns” from “A Little Night Music”
What can’t this incredibly gifted woman do?
Dame Judi Dench was one of the stars of the musical film Nine this year but has a much better showcase here as the lead in A Little Night Music on London’s West End in 1996.
The clip also includes an interview with Miss Dench explaining, better than I have ever heard, the reason behind the song Send in the Clowns.

2201 East says:
When this song was originally composed, an unusual situation had to be dealt with. Glynis Johns, the fine British actress who originated the part, has almost no vocal range to sing with. As a result, the song is just a step beyond speaking calling for no range from the singer. For those who do not know who Miss Johns is, she was the mother in Mary Poppins.
