Showtune Sunday: Betty Buckley, John Barrowman & cast of “Sunset Boulevard” at 1994 Olivier Awards

Have never seen this before and what a thrill to come upon it. It is a performance by the London Cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard at the 1994 Olivier Awards. It kicks off with a young, dreamy and oh-so-talented John Barrowman which leads to the production’s Norma Desmond, Betty Buckley. It seems like a role tailor made for Miss Buckley who also went on to play it on Broadway where she took over for Glenn Close. The London production originally starred Patti LuPone as Norma. LuPone starred for a year and had a contract to take the role to Broadway. When Close, the star of the Los Angeles production, was chosen over LuPone for New York, the great star trashed her dressing room in London then sued. She received a $1 million settlement.

    Colton Aalto says:

Not certain about the Patti vs. Glenn faceoff (I’d have to study that one), but John Barrowman is by far the best Joe Gillis to grace the stage.

  2. I was lucky enough to be in the audience for the special performances that Valentine weekend to see this musical and I remember being totally captivated by the lovely John Barrowman’s Joe Gillis. I’ve always been a huge fan of Bill Holden’s Joe in the screen version but there was a delicious lushness – and terrible sadness – added to the character by way of John’s singing. (I think I wore out the cd!) It’s one of my favourite Broadway memories.
