Showtune Sunday: All about Tyne Daly!
The great stage and television star Tyne Daly celebrated her 79th birthday a few days ago so let’s celebrate her!
The second photo of Miss Daly is one I took of her at the STAGE benefit for AIDS Project LA several years ago and on a night that she absolutely floored us with her performance of Rose’s Turn from Gypsy – the musical revival that won her a Tony Award in 1989.
Audiences who know Miss Daly best for her long-running and Emmy winning roles on Cagney & Lacey and Judging Amy (plus two years and another Emmy for Christy) may not be fully aware of what a Broadway diva she is.
She’s appeared in several Broadway plays including a Tony-nominated performance in Rabbit Hole in 2006. She also starred in Mothers and Sons (another Tony nod), Master Class and The Seagull.
Her most recent musical on Broadway was in 2015’s It Shoulda Been You but her planned return to The Great White Way in the play Doubt abruptly ended days before opening night when Miss Daly was hospitalized with an undisclosed illness. She is said to now be recovered.
I love watching her sing because she’s such a great actress and is never merely singing. She is delivering a full performance.
Enjoy some of the musical numbers from Miss Daly!
