Showtune Sunday: All about Carol Channing – a very deserving candidate for the Kennedy Center Honors
There is a campaign to get Carol Channing recognized this year with a Kennedy Center Honor.
Why is a campaign needed? Because it has not happened yet and it should have happened long ago. This national treasure is 92 and what a joy it would be – what a show it would be – if she were to receive this most prestigious honor.
Richard Skipper is one of the champions of this effort and here is a link to a column he posted the other day.
I’ve picked some clip to remind us all of how lucky we’ve been to have Miss Channing entertaining us for all these many years in Hello Dolly (more than 5,000 performances on Broadway and beyond), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Thoroughly Modern Millie and all the rest.
Despite her iconic roles, we have most loved her as herself.

I’d lvoe to see Carol Channing win the honor. She multi-talented and has carried several smash productions, but she’s just plain fun. Just a photo of her and that smile makes me happy. Razzberries!!
Daniel Gettleman says:
She is so deserving of this. Broadway, movies tv recording the ultimate little girl from little rock and Dolly Levi with such a unique quirky offbeat sense of comedy.

Not only is it about time but if the Kennedy Center is looking for a star studded, knock em dead awards show, this one would be it!! Carol’s celebrity fans are endless, Johnny Depp could give Carol the award and a slew of Carol Channing impersonators could fill the stage. Carol is a LEGEND and it’s a certainty that EVERYONE would feel the joy of her receiving this honor!
Glen Charlow says:
Channing has presented lovable and unforgettable characters, ultimately demonstrating her impressive talents and ability to relate to her loyal audiences across the country and around the globe. There isn’t anyone else more deserving of this award.
Davidson says:
Good luck on your campaign. The Kennedy Center is a very uppity organization that doesn’t seem to always support American artists. Giving the award to Pavarotti and Joan Sutherland was a real sign that the Kennedy Center is trying to be international and not an American Arts institution. The award should have also been given to Kitty Carlisle Hart for all she did for the arts in New York and nationally. Good luck to Richard Skipper in his Carol Channing campaign.

No one deserves the honor more than 92 year old Carol Channing who gives the world a smile every time we see her!

It’s so true that Carol Channing makes you smile just seeing her! What an agreeable recipient she will make. And no shortage of folks to sing her praises. She will be a ratings boost for sure.
Abbe Buck says:
Carol Channing has been a national treasure for over 60 years. There would be no singular way to cap her great career other than by giving her the Kennedy Center Honor.
lenny dawson says:
The Kennedy center honors has honored the best for many years now. The main reason for all of these inductees is that they are world ambassadors of taste, talent, humanity and role models. Carol Channing excelle
d in all of these areas and more many years ago. What a way to honor get career, foundation work with children, charity work and making so many people happy? Carol Channing not only deserves this award, but by your own standards is long over due. Kudos to the committee for doing the correct thing!!
Mike says:
Time to get her honored!!
Susan Berland says:
Let’s give Carol this honor while she is alive to enjoy it. Who better to honor than this great Broadway star!
